Cygnus X-1

Definition

Astronomy

  • X-ray source in Cygnus which is probably the site of the first black hole to be discovered. The X-rays are emitted by a disc of material around the black hole, orbiting just a few hundred miles above the hole itself. The material is being sucked from a companion star whose outer layers are gradually vanishing into the black hole.
