# damping factor

## Definitions

### Electronics

- For an underdamped
__vibrational__ system, the ratio of the amplitude of a given vibration, to that of the next vibration. For example, the ratio of the amplitude of a __damped oscillation__ to the succeeding one. Also called damping coefficient, or damping ratio. - The natural logarithm of the damping factor (1). Also called
__decrement__ (3), or logarithmic decrement. - The ratio of the nominal impedance of a
__speaker__, to the total __impedance__ driving it. A higher damping ratio stabilizes the driven speaker, and improves its __performance__. - synonymdamping coefficient
- synonymdamping ratio
- synonymdecrement
- The amount or
__value__ lost through the process of gradually decreasing a quantity or variable.

### Computing

- verb to subtract a set
__number__ from a variable
