  • A one-act play by Jean Genet, first produced by MarcelHerrand in Paris (1949); it was subsequently seen in New York (1958)and London (1961).

    Set in a prison, Deathwatch reflects Genet's experienceof being incarcerated for burglary in 1942 at Fresnes. The plot involvesthree cellmates, the murderer Yeux-Verts and two small-time crooks,Lefranc and Maurice, who aspire to emulate him. Lefranc eventuallykills Maurice in order to increase his prestige with Yeux-Verts.
