  • To rearrange the files located on a computer disk drive, so that they are contiguous. As files are deleted, modified or created on a drive, any available space may be used, which usually leads to fragmentation. The more contiguous the files are, the less the drive heads have to travel, thus access time is optimized. Also called defragment.
