DirtyLinen, in which a Parliamentary Committee discusses moral standardsin public life, began as a salute to Ed Berman, a US dramatist anddirector who became a naturalized British citizen. Stoppard then addedthe one-scene New Found Land, in which two Home Office officialsdiscuss an American's application to become a British subject; oneof them eventually delivers a comically impassioned eulogy on America.
