- A digital magnetic storage medium which is in the form of a flexible rotating plastic plate. Information is encoded by altering the magnetic polarity of minute portions on the coated surface of such a disk. Diskettes are much slower than hard disks, generally hold 1.44 megabytes of data, and their usual format is 3.5 inches, with a rigid case. Also called floppy disk, or flexible disk.
