divot

Definition

Slang

  • noun a toupée or hairpiece. The standard word, denoting a clod of earth and grass dug out by a golfing stroke, has become part of the adolescent lexicon of mockery (like its UK counterparts syrup (of figs), Irish, etc.). ‘Divot’ itself is an old Scottish word of unknown origin.
