  • A white-fleshed, slightly oily, round-bodied fish of various species of the shark family with a flexible cartilaginous skeleton up to 1 m in length and usually bought skinned. Common in European waters. See e.g. larger spotted dogfish, lesser spotted dogfish, rock salmon and smooth hound.
