  • In 18th-century France, a form of domestic drama that combinedelements of comedy and tragedy while emphasizing middle-class moralconcerns. The genre was named by Denis Diderot, who popularized itin such works as Le Pè re de famille (1761) and LeFils Naturel (1771).

    The drame, which developed from the comédielarmoyante and from the tragédie-bourgeoise of Voltaire,usually ended agreeably with scenes of repentance and reconciliation.
