  • In a British theater, the lower of two circles inthe auditorium, the other being the 'upper circle' or, formerly, 'familycircle'. The dress circle was so named because evening dress was oncerequired there. In 1878, a correspondent for the North AmericanReview marvelled at a London audience: "There they sit insplendid array in the dress circle, close to the royal box."
