- A painless and noninvasive medical diagnostic technique which utilizes ultrasonic waves to produce images of the internal structures and movements of the heart. A piezoelectric transducer is placed against the chest, and sends an ultrasound beam which is reflected off the various internal structures. The instrument utilized for this procedure is an echocardiograph, and the recorded images are called echocardiograms (1). Also called echocardiogram (2).
