effective earth radius

Definition

Electronics

  • A value utilized as the radius of the earth, as opposed to its geometrical radius. This is used to correct for atmospheric refraction when the index of refraction changes linearly with height. Under standard refraction conditions, the effective earth radius is 4/3 that of its actual radius. Utilized, for instance, for calculating the range of an antenna. Also called effective radius of the earth.
