  • A replica of a medieval tournament staged at Eglinton Castle, Scotland, in August 1839. The ladies wore fashions of the 14th and 15th centuries and the gentlemen, who included the future Napoleon III of France, appeared in the roleof knights. The occasion, which attracted some 100,000 spectators, is described in Disraeli's novel Endymion (1880).
