    In Greek legend, the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, who incited her brother Orestes to kill Clytemnestra in revenge for the latter's murderof Agamemnon. Electra is the eponymous heroine of tragedies by Sophoclesand Euripides and also features in Aeschylus's Oresteia,on which Eugene O'Neill's trilogy Mourning Becomes Electrais based.

    In psychoanalytical theory the term 'Electra complex' is sometimesused of the situation in which a daughter's attraction towards herfather is accompanied by hostility towards her mother (i.e. a femaleequivalent of the Oedipus complex).
