electrical-discharge machining

  • A method of machining metals, in which minute bits from its surface are vaporized through the use of a series of carefully controlled sparks between an electrode and the metal being worked on, under precise conditions. Used, for instance, for removing metal in hard to reach places, for machining complex patterns, or to work with metals which are otherwise difficult to machine. Its abbreviation is EDM. Also called electric discharge machining, or electron-discharge machining.
