  • The reduction or prevention of corrosion of a metallic material by making it the cathode in a conductive medium that has a sacrificial anode. This conductive medium may occur naturally, or can be applied externally. Used, for instance, in certain pipelines, bridges, and other metal structures requiring corrosion protection over an extended period of time. Also called cathodic protection.
