electromagnetic waves

  • Waves produced by the oscillation or acceleration of an electric charge. Such waves consist of sinusoidal electric and magnetic fields which are at right angles to each other, and to the direction of motion. electromagnetic waves propagate through a vacuum at the speed of light, as it does through the atmosphere under most conditions. Such waves encompass frequencies from just above 0 Hz to beyond 1024 Hz, corresponding to wavelengths of over 108 meters, to less than 10-16 meters, respectively. Also called electric waves, and when occurring within a specified interval of radio-frequencies, called radio waves or Hertzian waves.
