  • The mechanical strain that occurs in some materials, such as dielectrics, when placed in an electric field. If a material, such as certain ceramics, also produces an electric charge when under mechanical strain, then it possesses the property of piezoelectricity, not electrostriction. Also called electrostrictive effect, or electrostrictive strain (1).
