erbium-doped fiber amplifier
- Its abbreviation is EDFA. A broadband optical amplifier consisting of glass optical fibers doped with erbium. An EFDA increases the optical signal itself, as opposed to having to convert said signal into an electrical signal, which is amplified, then reconverted into light. EFDAs feature low insertion loss, high fiber-to-fiber gain, and no polarization sensitivity, but are limited by the buildup of spontaneous emission noise.
