  • Fatty acids which cannot be synthesized in the body and must be obtained from food sources. The important ones are: linolenic, linoleic, arachidonic (AA), gamma linolenic (GLA) and eicosopentanoic acid (EPA). All are involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins which have a variety of important bodily functions and in the construction of the myelin sheaths around nerve fibres and the synthesis of cell walls.
