Explanatory Trial

Definition

Health Economics

  • A species of controlled trial. Explanatory trials test whether an intervention has efficacy ; that is, whether it can have a beneficial effect in an ideal situation. They yield understanding of the processes and pathways through which the procedure being tested has its effects. The explanatory trial seeks to maximize internal validity by assuring rigorous control for confounding variables.
