  • In the 19th-century British theater, a lavish entertainmentresembling the burlesque but based on a myth or folk tale.Although satire was not the main aim of the extravaganza, a satiricalelement was often included along with the music and elaborate costumes.A leading writer of extravaganzas was James Robinson Planche (1796 - 1880),whose work influenced the librettist W. S. Gilbert. The actor H. J.Byron (1834 - 84) also wrote many extravaganzas and burlesques.
