Fanny's First Play

Definition

Theater

  • The play that proved the first great commercial success for GeorgeBernard Shaw; it was first staged (anonymously) in 1911 in London and went on to enjoy a long run on Broadway. The story centres on a satiricalplay-within-a-play written by Fanny O'Dowda, a Cambridge undergraduate. Thisfollows the son and daughter of two respectable middle-class families who both marry across the class divide after serving short prison sentences. In addition to the play's satire on conventional social values, Shaw maliciously lampooned four contemporary London drama critics. Because of these contemporary allusions, the play is seldom revived.
