• A type of fairytale play created in 18th-century Italy by CarloGozzi (1720 - 1806), who was attempting to revive and reform thecommedia dell'arte. He retained the stock characters andcomic improvisation, but used mythological subjects and added an elementof fantasy. His work, more respected in Germany and France than hisnative country, influenced such German writers as Goetheand Schiller.

    L'Augellino belverde (1764) is usually considered tobe Gozzi's best work. Turandot (1765) provided the librettofor an opera by Puccini, and The Love of Three Oranges (1761)inspired Prokofiev's opera of that name. His The Stag King(1761) was produced by the Young Vic in 1946.
