field-ion microscope

  • A microscope similar to a field emission microscope, but in which the sharply rounded point is surrounded by helium gas. This induces field ionization of the helium atoms, which are directed towards the screen. This variation has much greater resolving power, and magnifications of greater than 10 million can be attained. Its abbreviation is FIM. Also called ion microscope.
