  • A musical by Lionel Bart with the book by Frank Norman. Itwas first performed in 1959 by Joan Littlewood's TheatreWorkshop at Stratford East, subsequently transferring to the GarrickTheatre, where it ran for 897 performances and won the London EveningStandard Award as the year's best musical.

    The plot concerns a middle-aged gangster, Fred Cochran, whoruns an illegal gambling den in Soho with his lover, an ex-prostitutecalled Lil. When Fred is suddenly able to revamp and upgrade the clubafter a lucky win on the horses, he antagonizes an old criminal rival,who sends in his gang to teach Fred a lesson. Fred manages to outwitthem and decides to go straight and marry Lil. Meanwhile the localsergeant takes over the club and looks forward to a new life of crime.

    The songs include 'Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'be' and 'BigTime'.
