first-level cache

Definition

Electronics

  • A memory cache that is built right into the CPU. This contrasts with second-level cache, which utilizes a memory bank between the CPU and main memory. First-level cache is faster, but smaller than second-level cache, while second-level cache is still faster than main memory. Also called level 1 cache, L1 cache, internal cache, primary cache, or on-chip cache.
