- Peter Shaffer's first play; a critical and commercialsuccess, it established his reputation as a dramatist. It was firstperformed in 1958 at the Comedy Theatre, London, in a production byJohn Gielgud, and opened on Broadway the following year. The plotconcerns tensions in the middle-class Harrington family. A Germanorphan, Walter Langer, is hired to tutor the daughter of the family,to which he becomes closely attached. The son is jealous of the intrusionof this outsider and untruthfully informs his father that his motherand Walter are having an affair. Giving up hope of being adopted,Walter attempts suicide.
