fixed-point notation

  • noun a number representation that retains the position of the digits and decimal points in the computer, so limiting the maximum manageable numbers

  • A numeric format in which the decimal point is always in a fixed location. This contrasts with floating-point notation, in which the decimal point is not in a fixed location. Computer operations on fixed-point numbers usually require less time than that required for floating-point numbers. Also called fixed-point representation.
