Construction

  • A beam built up by two or more pieces bolted together, sometimes with a steel plate in the middle. The pieces, or flitches, are cut from a squared log sawn up the middle. The outer faces of the log are placed together, with their ends reversed to equalize their strength. See also flitch girder, sandwich beam.
