  • One of the row of floodlights positioned on the floor acrossthe front of the stage. Another British term is float. Oncea major source of illumination, these lights are virtually unusedtoday except for special effects, such as casting shadows around theeyes of an actor. The phrase 'the footlights' is also used to referto acting and the theater in general.
