  • In the 19th-century theater, a long rectangular opening inthe stage floor in front of the curtain into which the footlightscould be lowered. This was done to dim or darken the scene, as wellas to trim, clean, or repair the lamps in the cellar. The trap wascontrolled by a mechanism in the prompt corner.
