  • oscillation of a mechanical system which occurs only when the external driving force is present. Also called forced vibration. This contrasts with free oscillation (1), which occurs without an external force.
  • In a circuit, oscillation which is maintained through the continuous application of the excitation. This contrasts with free oscillation (2), which continues after the excitation is removed.
