Forest of Arden



  • A wooded tract of country in north Warwickshire, formerly partof a large forest covering much of the West Midlands (in his topographicalpoem Polyolbion the Elizabethan writer Michael Drayton described itas stretching from the Severn to the Trent). It is usually assumed to be theArden of Shakespeare's As You Like It, although he may have intendedthe Ardennes region of France and Belgium, as several of the play's charactershave French names.

    The Arden Shakespeare is the standard modern scholarlyedition of the plays. Shakespeare's mother was one Mary Arden.
