four-channel sound system



  • A sound system in which there are four channels, each feeding its own speaker. It is meant to be an enhancement of two-channel stereo. When recording, the signals of the four channels are encoded into two channels, and when reproducing, the signals are de-coded so as to provide the four original channels. Its abbreviation is 4-channel sound system. Also called four-channel sound (1), four-channel stereo, or quadraphonic sound system.
