free-electron laser

  • A powerful and efficient laser which generates coherent radiation through the interaction of an electron beam and a periodic transverse magnetic field. The field makes the electrons, moving at nearly the speed of light, oscillate and thus emit radiation. Such a laser may be adjusted to deliver varying power levels through a wide interval of wavelengths, including those encompassing the infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, and X-ray regions. Its abbreviation is FEL.
