frequency meter

  • An instrument, such as a cavity frequency meter or frequency counter, utilized to measure the frequency of a signal. Such an instrument is usually graduated in hertz, or multiples of hertz, such as kilohertz or gigahertz. A frequency meter can usually be utilized as a wavemeter, and vice versa, as either quantity can be obtained knowing the other, according to the following formula: Λ = c/f, where Λ is wavelength, c is the speed of light in a vacuum, and f is the frequency.
  • An instrument utilized to measure the frequency of an alternating current.
