  • The puffer fish, Fugu rubripes, whose liver and blood contain a deadly nerve poison. The flesh is used in sashimi and this contains just enough of the poison to give a tingling sensation in the lips. Only licensed chefs may prepare the fish. Several deaths occur yearly in Japan from consuming incorrectly prepared fugu.
