G.I. Hamlet



  • A simplified version of Shakespeare's Hamlet, as performedby the actor Maurice Evans for US troops during World WarII. "We are giving you," he informed the audience, "aHamlet without the intellectual trimmings." The condenseddrama, also known as the 'Jeep Version' made Hamlet a decisive manof action rather than the hesitant dreamer of tradition. The playproved so popular with the troops that Evans performed it in 1946at the Columbus circle Theater, New York, for 131 performances andthen took it on tour.
