  • A silvery-white metallic chemical element whose atomic number is 64. It is highly magnetic, ferromagnetic, has the highest neutron absorption cross section of any element, and is superconductive. It has over two-dozen known isotopes, of which several are stable. Its applications include its use in microwave communications, lasers, as a phosphor activator in TV picture tubes, and in control rods. Its chemical symbol is Gd.
