Gegenschein

Definition

Astronomy

  • The ‘counter-glow’ – the literal meaning of its German name – sometimes seen in the sky opposite the Sun at dawn or dusk. This extremely faint light is caused by sunlight being scattered back to the Earth from dust in interplanetary space. The Gegenschein can only be seen from sites with very good viewing conditions.
