  • The nickname, acquired as a result of his elegance, of theBritish general and playwright John Burgoyne (1722 - 92). Followingseveral undistinguished works, Burgoyne wrote The Heiress,a highly successful comedy, which was produced at Drury Lane by Sheridanin 1786. Burgoyne is probably better remembered, however, for hisdefeat at Saratoga (1777) during the American War of Independence.He appears as a character in George Bernard Shaw's The Devil'sDisciple.
