  • For a product of n factors, the nth root. For instance, the geometric mean of 6 and 216 (a total of two factors) is 36, as the square root of 1,296 is 36. Also called mean (2).

    Like the ordinary average (arithmetic mean) this is a measure of the central tendency in a distribution of a variable. The geometric mean is the n th root of n positive real numbers multiplied together. It dampens the effect on the mean of extreme values of a variable in comparison with the arithmetic mean.
