  • noun a native or inhabitant of Newcastle or Tyneside in the northeast of England. The word is a Scottish dialect version of george and probably first arose as a nickname for one of the Hanoverian kings, used by, and later applied to, soldiers billeted upon Newcastle. The name refers also to the distinctive speech patterns of the area.
