Gompertz Function

Health Economics

  • Benjamin Gompertz invented a 'law of mortality' to the effect that the mortality rate increases with age in a geometric progression. When death rates are plotted on a logarithmic scale, a straight line known as the Gompertz function is obtained. Benjamin Gompertz (1779-1865) was a self-educated (being denied access to English universities, as was then the wicked rule, by virtue of being Jewish) English mathematician (of Dutch parentage).
