grand cru classé

  • a term with different meanings in different parts of France. In the Médoc area of Bordeaux, estates listed as deuxième cru, troisième cru, quatrième cru or cinquième cru (second, third, fourth or fifth growth) in the classification of 1855 can use the term grand cru classé on their labels. In the much later classification of the Saint-Émilion region, this was awarded to the second-best wines of the area, though these are still not as good as those of the Médoc deuxième cru rating that can use a similar wording.
