Great Piazza Coffee House



  • A former coffee house, located at the northeast corner of theCovent Garden piazza, that opened in 1756. It was from here that theplaywright Richard Sheridan (1751 - 1861) watched a firedestroy the Drury Lane Theatre, of which he was manager.He remarked at the time: "A man may surely be allowed to takea glass of wine at his own fireside." The disaster ended histheatrical career. The building became a hotel in 1840 and was pulleddown in 1865. see also fires.
