Haraszthy, Count Agoston



  • (1812–1869) Hungarian-born Count who emigrated to the US, settled first in Wisconsin where he planted his first vineyard, then moved to California, and in 1857 founded Buena Vista Winery. He experimented with new growing and wine-making techniques, and made several trips to Europe’s best vineyards for cuttings, eventually introducing around 300 grape varieties to California, establishing him as the father of the California wine industry.
