  • (Erik Weisz; 1874 - 1926) The world's most celebrated illusionistand escapologist. Born in Budapest of Jewish parents, who emigratedto America when he was small, he began his career as a magician in 1890 but found little success until he toured Europe with his escapology act in 1900. Over the next decade his baffling escapes from handcuffs, straitjackets, bank safes, and even a 'Chinese water torture cell' made him one of the first modern celebrities. He died from a ruptured appendix - possibly caused by a punch to the stomach delivered before he had tensed his muscles.
