have a scene (with someone)

  • verb to have a sexual relationship, have an affair (with someone). This phrase, now sounding rather dated but as yet lacking a more fashionable alternative, was the standard term throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s for an unmarried relationship. The expression, particularly popular with middle-class British hippies, avoided the juvenile, frivolous or banal implications of ‘going out with’ and the middle-aged overtones of the word ‘affair’.
